SNI Rebar Guide: Types, Sizes, Grades & How to Choose [Complete Guide]
The complete rebar guide from a steel mill: definition, plain & deformed types, size table, SNI 2052:2024 grades, and how to buy factory-direct.

Rebar — reinforcing steel bar, known in Indonesia as besi beton or baja tulangan — is the steel bar used to strengthen concrete structures. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension; rebar fills that gap, making reinforced concrete the backbone of nearly every modern structure: houses, high-rises, bridges, and dams.

As a steel mill producing rebar for over 50 years, Inter World Steel presents this complete guide to help you understand and choose the right rebar.

Types of Rebar: Plain and Deformed

1. Plain Bars (BjTP) — smooth surface, round section. Easily bent, commonly used for stirrups and distribution reinforcement. Common grade: BjTP 280.

2. Deformed Bars (BjTS) — ribbed surface for far stronger bonding with concrete. Used for main reinforcement of columns, beams, foundations, and all load-bearing structures. Grades: BjTS 420 up to BjTS 550 for high-load structures.

Grades Under SNI 2052:2024

SNI 2052:2024 is Indonesia's national standard for concrete reinforcing steel — covering dimensions, tolerances, mechanical properties, and marking. Main grades:

- BjTP 280: plain bar, minimum yield strength 280 MPa
- BjTS 420: deformed bar, minimum yield strength 420 MPa with ductility requirements for earthquake-resistant construction
- BjTS 550: high-grade deformed bar, minimum yield 550 MPa, for long-span bridges and tall buildings

Rebar Sizes and Weights

Rebar is sold in standard 12-meter lengths. Weight follows 0.006165 × d² (kg/m). Common project sizes:

- Plain: 8, 10, 12 mm
- Deformed: D10, D13, D16, D19, D22, D25

Full tables of diameter, nominal weight per meter, and tolerances are on our Product Specification page.

Genuine SNI Rebar vs Sub-Standard Bars

Beware of under-sized bars sold below their labeled diameter. Genuine SNI rebar has:

1. Raised marking on the bar: mill initials, diameter, steel grade
2. Actual diameter matching the label under caliper measurement
3. Weight per bar matching nominal
4. SPPT-SNI certificate and mill certificate (tensile, bend, chemical tests)

What Determines Rebar Prices

Rebar prices follow global raw material costs (scrap and billet), diameter and type, grade, and the distribution chain. Buying factory-direct is generally more competitive — and guarantees authentic quality.

Tips for Choosing Rebar

1. Match the grade to the structural design — never below the engineer's spec
2. In seismic areas, use at least BjTS 420
3. Always request SNI and mill certificates
4. Check markings and measure diameters on delivery
5. Buy from a mill or authorized distributor with a clear track record
