Choosing a rebar distributor is usually settled in a single phone call: whoever replies fastest and quotes lowest gets the order. The consequences of that decision surface weeks later — when the bars are already on site, the crew says they feel light, and the supervising engineer asks for quality documents that were never issued.
This article sets out what actually deserves checking before a distributor is trusted with your project supply. Every check can be done before the first delivery, and most of them need nothing more than the right question and a weighing scale.
Mill, distributor and hardware store are not the same thing
These three terms are often used interchangeably, yet their position and responsibility differ. Knowing the difference decides who you should turn to when a quality problem appears.
The mill
The party that actually rolls steel into bars. A mill is the only original source of a mill certificate and the holder of the SNI certificate for its products. The distributor
Buys in volume from mills, holds stock, and channels it to projects and stores. A sound distributor can state which mill the material came from and pass on the quality documents unchanged, without blurring the origin.
The hardware store
Serves retail to mid-sized demand and often mixes stock from several sources. That is usually fine for a house renovation, but on a project audited by a supervising consultant, mixed sources make traceability nearly impossible.

Seven things to verify before appointing a distributor
- The origin is named plainly. Ask which mill produced the bars, not merely whether they are "SNI". Reluctance to name the source is the first signal worth noticing.
- Mill certificates are available per batch. The document carries tensile test results and chemical composition for a specific heat number. Ask to see one from an earlier shipment before you order.
- The SPPT-SNI can be produced. This certificate belongs to the mill and its products. A copy should be handed over without any fuss.
- Bar weight matches the standard. This is the cheapest and most honest check available. The method is in the next section.
- Bar markings are legible. Certified deformed bars carry rolled-on marks identifying the producer and the grade. Deformed bars with no identification at all deserve questions.
- Size availability and schedule capability. Projects stall not only because of poor steel, but because D19 never arrives on time. Ask which sizes are always in stock and which are made to order.
- A written quotation stating the calculation basis. A good quotation says whether pricing is per kilogram or per bar, and which reference weight applies. Without that, two quotations cannot be compared fairly.
The standard weight table — the cheapest way to test a distributor
Rebar weight follows the SNI formula and depends on diameter alone: weight (kg/m) = 0.006165 × d². Plain and deformed bars of the same diameter weigh exactly the same. The standard bar length is 12 metres.

The last column is included because project transactions are often agreed in tonnes while the material arrives counted in bars.
Example: checking a delivery in ten minutes
Suppose you ordered 5 tonnes of D13 deformed bar. From the table, one D13 bar weighs 12.50 kg, so the quantity you should receive is 5,000 ÷ 12.50 = 400 bars.
On arrival, take a random sample of 10 bars and weigh them together. The reading should be close to 10 × 12.50 = 125.0 kg. If the scale shows far less — say 112 kg, roughly 10 percent lighter — what you received is most likely not full-size D13.
A second example, an order of 3 tonnes of D16: 3,000 ÷ 18.94 = 158.4, rounded to 158 bars, equal to 158 × 18.94 = 2,992.5 kg. The gap against a round 3 tonnes is normal because bars cannot be split, and it should be reflected on the delivery note.
SNI 2052 sets different weight tolerances for each diameter group. Ask the distributor to show the tolerance figure that applies to the size you are buying, then compare it with your own weighing. A sound distributor answers without hesitation and will even provide the scale.
Common mistakes when choosing a distributor
Comparing prices on different bases
Per-bar quotations from two suppliers can look almost identical while the bars themselves differ in weight. Always convert to price per kilogram using the standard weights above. This is discussed in detail in our article on rebar price per kg.
Assuming every SNI label means the same thing

Substituting plain bar for deformed bar to save money

Ordering without a staged delivery schedule
Stacking the entire requirement on site at the start adds rust and loss risk while locking up cash flow. An experienced distributor will offer staged deliveries that follow your casting sequence.
