Rebar pricing is a primary concern for every contractor and project owner before construction begins. The difficulty is that steel prices track the global market and shift from month to month — a figure that is correct today can be wrong within weeks.

The Two Ways Rebar Is Quoted

This is the most common source of confusion. Quotations arrive in two forms, and the two cannot be compared directly:

  • Price per kilogram — standard at mills and for project-volume purchasing. This is the real price, because what you are buying is steel.
  • Price per bar — standard at retail hardware suppliers. Convenient, but it conceals the actual weight of that bar.

Per-bar quotes are only a fair comparison when the bars weigh the same. That gap is exactly where buyers get caught.

Converting Price per Kilogram to Price per Bar

The formula is simple:

Price per bar = price per kg × bar weight

Bar weight follows the SNI formula 0.006165 × d² per metre, multiplied by the standard 12-metre length:

For example, at a quoted IDR 12,000 per kg, one D16 bar should come to 12,000 × 18.94 = IDR 227,280. To work the other way, divide the per-bar price by the bar weight.

The Cheap-Price Trap: Undersized Bar

This is the single best reason to work in kilograms. Consider two D13 quotations:

  • Quote A — IDR 155,000 per bar, actual weight 12.50 kg. That is IDR 12,400 per kg.
  • Quote B — IDR 140,000 per bar, actual weight only 10.80 kg. That is IDR 12,963 per kg.

Quote B looks IDR 15,000 cheaper per bar, yet it is more expensive per kilogram of steel actually delivered. You pay more for less steel — and receive bars whose tensile capacity falls below the structural design.

What Moves Rebar Prices

  1. Global raw material costs — scrap and billet trade internationally; their moves reach local prices within weeks.
  2. Grade — BjTS 550 requires tighter process control than BjTP 280, and pricing reflects that.
  3. Diameter — price per kilogram is broadly uniform across diameters; what differs sharply is price per bar, because the weights differ.
  4. Order volume — project-scale purchasing is priced differently from retail.
  5. Distance and freight — steel is heavy, so site location has a real effect on delivered cost.
  6. Length of the distribution chain — every intermediary adds margin.

How to Request Comparable Quotations

To make quotes from several suppliers genuinely comparable, state the following in your request:

  1. The specific grade — write BjTS 420, not simply "deformed bar"
  2. Diameter and quantity in kilograms or tonnes, not in number of bars
  3. A request for price per kilogram, even if delivery is counted in bars
  4. Certification status — ask whether SPPT-SNI and mill certificates are available
  5. Delivery location — so freight is included rather than a later surprise
  6. Quotation validity — steel prices move; ask how long the price is held

Getting the Best Price

  • Buy direct from an SNI-certified mill — it removes intermediaries and guarantees weight and grade
  • Order at project volume rather than retail
  • Consolidate several project phases into one order where storage allows
  • Make sure the quotation states actual weight, not just a bar count
  • Plan orders ahead — urgent purchases rarely attract the best price
